Fault Lines

Nancy Huston

Reminiscent of Nicole Krauss’s The History of Love in its scale and passion, Fault Lines tells the story of one family through four generations, and the scars that mark their shared history. Winner of the Prix Femina 2006.

Sol is a gifted six-year-old; his mother believes he is destined for greatness. Yet he is also unsettling, chillingly un-childlike. He has a birthmark, the same one his father, his grandmother and his great-grandmother had before him. When they make an unexpected trip to Germany, terrible secrets start to emerge.

Tracing back through the years, from California to New York, from Haifa to Toronto and Munich, Fault Lines awakens dormant family secrets, which send shock waves reverberating from a hidden past into a fragile present. Domestic in focus and epic in scope, Fault Lines is a vibrant, richly drawn and captivating piece of storytelling which shows what can happen when past and present collide. Birthmarks are not all that can be passed down through a family line…

From the international reviews:

‘Nancy Huston is a brilliant, lyrical, unforgettable writer.’ Janette Turner Hospital

‘Explosive in its control and its ambition.’ Le Figaro
