‘Can I speak to your Uuuuuuuuuubereditor, please’

Who’s calling?

‘I'm an aaaaaaaaaagent and I need to ask him about a manuscript I've sent him,’

‘I’m sorry, he’s in a meeting can I take a message?’

‘Can I leave one?’

‘Yes.’

Silence, while I wait.

‘Okay, go ahead…’ I prompt.

‘Oh doesn’t he have voice mail?’

‘No it’s the old fashioned woman with a pen writing it down method.’

‘Ha ha ha ha ha…. (looooooong silence) …that’s funny.’

You see, all this and stand-up.
