Who we are
Atlantic Books is an independent British publishing house. It was founded by Toby Mundy in February 2000 and published its first book in May 2001. It has since developed a list that has a world-wide reputation for quality, originality and breadth, and includes fiction, history, politics, memoir and current affairs. It won 'Imprint and Editor of the Year' at the British Books Awards in 2005 and 2009, and was 'Independent Publisher of the Year' in 2009.
In 2009 Atlantic Books entered a partnership with Australia’s largest independent publisher Allen & Unwin. Atlantic Books are proud to represent key Allen & Unwin titles from their adult list in the UK.
In 2010 Atlantic Books started publishing a small selection of books on behalf of Grove/Atlantic Inc. in the UK under the Grove Press UK imprint.
In 2011, Atlantic Books was pleased to take on sales and distribution for Tindal Street Press.
The Independent Alliance
The Independent Alliance is a global alliance of ten UK publishers and their international partners who share a common vision of editorial excellence, original, diverse publishing, innovation in marketing and commercial success.
The founding publishers of the Independent Alliance were Faber and Faber, Atlantic Books, Canongate, Icon Books, Profile Books and Short Books who came to partnership in July 2005. Quercus Publishing joined in September 2005, Serpent’s Tail - part of Profile Books - in January 2007, and Granta in September 2007. Faber and Faber provides the sales force and administrative team for Independent Alliance publishers and, in March 2008, The Book Service Ltd. (TBS) became sole distributor.
In 2006 the Independent Alliance announced a range of exclusive benefits for its independent counterparts in bookselling, including increased terms, point of sale and dedicated promotions on titles from leading authors, aimed to help them promote their businesses and boost sales. Together, the publishers and booksellers are a unique umbrella organisation representing shared core values - Independence, Integrity, Quality and Range - in an increasingly centralised marketplace.
Faber & Faber was awarded the IPG’s inaugural Independent Publishing Awards Nielsen Innovation of the Year Award for its Independent Alliance of publishers.
The Independent Alliance publishers are: Atlantic Books, Canongate Books, Faber and Faber, Granta Books, Icon Books, Portobello Books, Profile Books, Quercus Publishing, Serpent’s Tail and Short Books.
